Mathematics

The Mathematics department consists of eight classrooms. Each teacher has calculators and specialist equipment to assist with learning, although students are also expected to have their own equipment to enable familiarity and completion of homework.

Key Stage 3

In Key Stage 3 students will build on the achievements and experiences of Key Stage 2 Mathematics as well as developing the fundamental skills required for a smooth transition into Key Stage 4. All classes follow the National Curriculum and teachers differentiate their lessons to accommodate different learning styles.

The Maths department has a wide variety of resources to support learning both within the classroom and at home. Each student receives a personal login to both the MyMaths and MathsWatch websites, which allows them to work independently in order to further consolidate and deepen their understanding of topics.

Assessment in Key Stage 3 is a combination of written homework, which is marked and commented upon by the class teacher, and online MyMaths homework. Each half term students sit an assessment paper which sets the personalised targets for the coming term.

Key Stage 4

Year 9 and 10 students follow the Edexcel Key Stage 4. The scheme of work for Key Stage 4 has been fully updated to incorporate the changes in the syllabus for Mathematics and is currently being delivered to our Year 9 and 10 pupils.

There are two tiers of entry; Foundation (Grades 1-5) and Higher (Grades 4-9). The national curriculum for mathematics aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions

During the course, pupils will develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including Number, Algebra, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change, Geometry and Measures, Statistics and Probability. They will also learn how to use this knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts and apply functional elements of mathematics in everyday and real-life situations. Pupils’ understanding will be assessed through three written examinations.

Year 11 pupils are still following the Mathematics 2010 syllabus. Functional Skills (i.e. Maths in the real world, both in personal life and skills needed for the workplace) will feature more heavily.

Key Stage 5

Students at Key Stage 5 sit the Edexcel AS/A level. The course comprises four core modules of pure mathematics and two modules of applied, Decision and Statistics. The main resource used is Heinemann A level textbooks. On top of the resources for each key stage, all students are given a MyMaths account. This enables them to access a wide variety of online Mathematical content, from lessons and revision packs to games. It also has the facility for online homework.

Enrichment

The department also runs numerous enrichment activities. These include:

  • Year 9 students attend a six-week Maths master classes at Uxbridge Civic Centre
  • United Kingdom Mathematics Trust Individual Maths Challenge at Junior, Intermediate and Senior level (7, 8, 9, 10, 11), with several students receiving certificates
  • Hillingdon Maths Challenge team competition for top performing Year 7, 8, 10 and 11 pupils.

In addition the department runs numerous revision and booster classes for examination groups.
