Shanghai comes to Stockley

A delegation of ten Chinese students and accompanying teachers set down at Heathrow from Shanghai last weekend, arriving for a week long visit to their partner school, Stockley Academy.
The students from Ganquan Middle School were visiting as part of a ‘linking initiative’ through the International School Award (ISA). The scheme developed by the Department of Education and the British Council recognizes the positive impact of learning about different cultures. Stockley Academy is currently accredited to Intermediate Level.
The Chinese pupils enjoyed a weekend of London site-seeing, including a trip to the Science Museum and Tate Gallery. They arrived at school on Monday morning, 12th July, and were welcomed by their Stockley ‘buddies’ and join in a fun and informative week of learning.
High on the agenda was a lesson at the academy’s Lego Centre; demonstrating Stockley Academy’s commitment to their specialist topics of Science and Technology. Principal, Ian Storey commented, “One of the many reasons we have partnered with Ganguan School is their amazing location in Shanghai. The feats of engineering used in the city’s skyscrapers are absolutely breathtaking and we will be taking the opportunity to share some of the fabulous sights in our capital too. This initiative is an exciting way for schools to pool ideas and educational experiences whilst addressing the cohesion of the wider global community.”
As part of the week’s curriculum, the Shanghai students joined an English Mandarin speaking Shakespeare lesson, a music lesson with African drums and in another, shared details of their lives’ at Ganguan Middle School. The week long visit culminated with a Private view Art Exhibition in the Academy’s striking Atrium, followed by a farewell celebration event. There are plans for a reciprocal visit by Stockley staff and students to Shanghai in the Autumn term.
During their visit the Chinese delegation were accommodated at one of Stockley Academy’s main sponsors, Brunel University.
